Reps. A. Donald McEachin (VA-04), Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01), and Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) re-introduced the Protecting Our Students in Schools Act to federally prohibit the practice of corporal punishment in any school that receives federal funding. The legislation would also establish much-needed enforcement protections and a federal grant program to assist states and school districts in improving the climate and culture of schools across the country.

"Also, for being a father in Brazil, I didn’t have any references of fathers who were actually involved in raising their kids, because our society only expects moms to really take care of their kids, while the dads are seen as unable to take care of a baby. That didn’t make any sense for me at that time (and still doesn’t), so I started researching different views on child rearing."

The data in the Yearbook is clear: The circumstances into which a baby is born makes an important difference in his or her life start and direction. On the surface, the data looks to favor some U.S. states over others. There’s a lot more going on than location–the influence of race and ethnicity, combined with interpersonal and institutional racism, are all critical factors on the quality of health care that mothers and children receive. Even prior to conception. |

"About two-thirds of maternal deaths, newborn deaths and stillbirths could be prevented by 2035 if the current level of care by professional midwives educated and regulated to international standards was scaled up to provide universal access, finds a new study led by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), WHO, and the International Confederation of Midwives published today in the Lancet Global Health." |

"Right now, much of our society is stuck…in common-yet-dysfunctional relationship patterns that promote toughness (over tenderness) and isolation (over togetherness), and the results have been catastrophic on our well-being. That’s why we celebrate the extremely timely release of “Breaking the Cycle.” This 6-minute educational short film is now available online for public viewing at no cost." |

"These are all heavy hints that what’s transpiring within our brains is just as extreme as our external makeover. Over the course of a few short months, our brains are abruptly renovated, causing us to reinterpret familiar stimuli—a stranger’s face, or the color red, or the smell of a tiny T-shirt—in freaky new ways. Suddenly a child’s smile is our alpha and omega. Our old systems of desire have been rewired. The most striking change in motherhood isn’t about how we look on the outside. It’s about how we see." |

"The attachment theory argues that a strong emotional and physical bond to one primary caregiver in our first years of life is critical to our development. If our bonding is strong and we are securely attached, then we feel safe to explore the world. If our bond is weak, we feel insecurely attached. We are afraid to leave or explore a rather scary-looking world. Because we are not sure if we can return. Often we then don't understand our own feelings." |
Strive for Balance in Personal and Family Life

The vast majority of developed nations in the world guarantee paid parental leave after the birth of a baby–in the least, two months in Ireland; at the most, more an one and one-half years in Estonia. |

"The idea of the “good enough parent” goes back decades. Attachment researchers, such as John Bowlby, discovered that parents need to be emotionally present, to comfort their child, attune to their child’s feelings, show delight when seeing their child, and support their child in order to have a healthy and secure parent-child attachment. In other words, they are caring for and connected with their child, without sacrificing their personal needs and health." |

"Moments of being seen by other people, and being met with respect or even enthusiasm, can energize and invigorate us and help create bonds within our neighborhood or community. As you emerge from pandemic life, try to reconnect with a community you’ve missed. It might be going back to church or choir practice, a running group or yoga class or even just hanging out at your local coffee shop. And don’t be afraid to chat with a stranger, reconnect with your barista or strike up a conversation at the dog park." |

Do you have allomothers? "When asked about their perception of the evolved nest, both mothers said that what they frequently missed was allomothers—other motherers. They are right, it is a species need linked to the evolution of our big brain (Hrdy, 2009). |

"In our effort to highlight family strengths, it is critical to highlight how positive and stressful experiences can be linked. Research has shown that post-traumatic brain growth can lead to increased feelings of closeness after a traumatic event or experience. Parents’ feelings of bonding with their children may encourage a mitigating effect against toxic stress that is increased by feelings of social connectedness – in other words, the closeness felt in times of stress promotes resilient brain growth!" |

The Family and Home Network on the Refundable Child Tax Credit (CTC) in the American Rescue Plan: This is an inclusive family policy, available to all families with children. The amount of the credit was raised for 2021; it is $3000 per child ages 6-17; $3600 per child under age 6. Researchers estimating the costs and benefits of the Refundable Child Tax Credit say: “the benefits created by a child allowance could be worth eight times the annual program cost.” |

"Fathers who were surveyed similarly noted that caring for their children—like discovering the perfect speed to rock your child or the temperature that they like their milk—can be learned. Like women, they too have a caring instinct and can equally succeed at care tasks. |

"We finished all the milk in the house around question seven, which is when we switched to vanilla ice cream. Between the jokes and the spice-induced weeping, we learned more about our boys at that dinner than we had in years. They gave their answers willingly and honestly, not necessarily because of the spice, but because we had made an effort to connect on their terms." |

Feed with Love and Respect

"In 1981, health officials from around the world gathered at the World Health Assembly to address aggressive marketing tactics by the infant and young child feeding industry, which was promoting formula feeding over breastfeeding and causing a dramatic increase in infant morbidity and mortality. The result was the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes (the Code), a landmark policy framework designed to stop commercial interests from damaging breastfeeding rates and endangering the health and nutrition of the world’s youngest inhabitants." Respond with Sensitivity
May 13, 2021
"What I really wanted to do was lock myself away in a room and completely ignore the cries. But when I stepped away to take that breath, I suddenly thought back to the early days of our life together – of those tearful moments when what my daughter needed more than anything was my presence, even if she wasn’t immediately soothed. So, I went to where she lay – face streaked with tears and flushed red with frustration. I sat down next to her, placed my hand on her back, and started talking. |

"Be Attentive while conversing with them. Giving full attention to your child works wonders in improving parent-child communication. When children initiate a conversation, make sure you give your undivided attention. This will require you to leave what you are doing to listen to what they are saying." |

"But we also looked at the timing and the nature of good things — relational health, connection to family, community and culture. And here's basically what we find: that if you have adversity, but you also have connections to family and community and culture, which are resilience building factors, you're not at any increased risk for bad outcomes. However, if you have adversity and the amount of adversities sort of outweighs the presence of relational connection, you have significant increase in risk. |

"The findings are in line with similar research conducted on children who had experienced severe violence, suggesting that “while we might not conceptualize corporal punishment to be a form of violence, in terms of how a child’s brain responds, it’s not all that different than abuse,” said McLaughlin. “It’s more a difference of degree than of type.”" |

"Mothers and babies are routinely separated after C-section in many places around the world. However, more places are offering “gentle cesarean” techniques, or “mother-friendly C-sections”, where the baby is placed immediately on the mother’s chest in the operating theatre, with immediate skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding fully supported.. |
