Working Moms Need A Real Option To Breastfeed After Maternity Leave
"While there are have been many surprises during this long election season, one of the positive surprises for women in the workforce has been the growing bipartisan support for paid family leave. In fact, some commentators believe the U.S. has never been closer to passing paid parental leave.
While many corporations voluntarily offer paid parental leave policies in order to better attract and retain employees, these benefits can differ wildly by company. But a category of benefits that isn't voluntary is the legal requirement that employers must follow if a breastfeeding mother returns to work and decides to pump breastmilk.
Many mothers who return from maternity leave try to follow the breast-feeding recommendations put forth by the American Pediatric Associationthat mothers nurse their babies for six months. Since fewer than 1% of U.S. companies offer six months of maternity leave, many women must pump during their workdays. According to a recent Fairygodboss survey, almost 60% of working moms said they have pumped at work. "
