Respond with Sensitivity

With all the mass shootings and terrorist activities that have occurred this year in the United States and around the world, not to mention the last few years -- it is mind boggling, heart breaking and troubling to me as a parent whose goal is to raise compassionate, peaceful children. How am I suppose to do that exactly? Read more in on API's blog. |

""Many years of research have shown that social-emotional skills — like empathy, kindness, and social skills — are critical to success across a variety of different measures as children develop," said Stephanie Jones, the Marie and Max Kargman Associate Professor and co-director of the Making Caring Common Project at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. "These findings can help spur much needed conversations about how to raise caring and empathic children." |

I belive empathy is one of the most important aspects in promoting peace. Children who are taught to be empathetic and who witness empathy will, in turn, show more empathy to others. Mother of 3 and API Leader, Kelly Shealer shares real-life examples of how she disciplines with empathy in on API's blog. |

It has never escaped me that AP Month falls on Domestic Violence Awareness Month every year, each October. Being a domestic violence survivor myself and now working in the field as an advocate, it is my sincere belief that how we raise our children can change the world, and if we go the extra mile, so to speak, to teach them healthy relationship and peaceful conflict resolution skills, that they will "pay it forward" with their life choices. They can at least change the legacy of their family tree, though I am far from giving up hope for the next generation with API's influence. |

"Children are the seed for peace or violence in the future, depending on how they are cared for and stimulated. Thus, their family and community environment must be sown to grow a fairer and more fraternal world, a world to serve life and hope." Share this meme on API's blog and Facebook page. |

API honors parents and caregivers as the ultimate peacemakers. Children internalize the values we transmit over time through our own actions and interactions. Parenting infused with peace and harmony informs the responses of our future global leaders as they face conflict. We aim to support parents in peaceful and harmonious impulses, so they might be reflected in future global conditions. Parents and caregivers who foster peaceful relationships with their children make real contributions toward this global goal. |

We often reflect on whether or not API has made a difference in our efforts toward peace. API isn’t about promoting just parenting strategies: We have a broader long-term vision we have often described as “peaceful parenting for a peaceful world.” API's cofounders inspire parents of how to do this on API's blog. |

Provide Consistent and Loving Care

"Olson and her husband discussed the possibility of her switching jobs. But they decided that while she doesn't get paid leave or other traditional benefits at her current workplace, she values the flexibility she has to be able to take time off — albeit unpaid — to take care of things at home. Of course, Olson wishes she could have stayed home longer. But she's grateful to her co-workers for the few weeks she had, and determined to get through the next few months balancing her job and her baby." |

"Research tells us that infancy is a critical period for health and child development. In the first year or two of life, 700 new synapses are forming every second in the child's brain. As a developmental and behavioral pediatrician I know firsthand that the first six to nine months of life is a critical bonding time for the parents and the child, and bonding is the basis of the parent responding to the child's needs." |

"“Mothers don’t stop being mothers when they get to work,” bill sponsor Democrat Valerie Vainieri Huttle said in a statement. “The benefits of breastfeeding babies, especially during the first six months, are undisputable.
