"The research team wanted to measure the effect of the so-called kangaroo mother caremethod on these children, both those born at home those who returned home only few hours after birth. The method is based on holding the newborn tightly into the body with the help of a scarf or harness, during the first month, preferably more than 12 hours a day. “We discovered that the chance of survival increased as much as 30 per cent within the first month and by 25 per cent within the first six months,” says Professor Halvor Sommerfelt, leader of CISMAC, UiB."

The power of empathy when parenting is challenging... "What I was lacking was an essential empathy for my children. What I lacked was listening and understanding. Reading through the workbook, it struck me that my oldest had only been on the planet for 7 years. And yet, I was expecting him to act like a well-mannered 40-year-old. That was something I could barely do having lived 40 years." Patrick A. Coleman for Fatherly |
Attachment Parenting International was founded in Nashville, Tennessee, and is home to board members, council members, and group leaders. Our hearts go out to all those affected by the tornado and in gratitude for the amazing efforts of the community to come together and serve each other. The tornado shock and devastation from last night is challenging to process, especially for children. The Association of Infant Mental Health in Tennessee shares these resources to help the children in your life suffering personally from trauma of disaster and other kinds of trauma, and those concerned about happenings in the world. Prepare for Pregnancy, Birth, and Parenting
"But it’s important to remember that attachment parenting places specific emphasis on responding to your baby’s and children’s needs sensitively and recognizing their behaviors for what they are: manifestations of needs. Because that’s the core concept of attachment parenting, that will look different in different children, and if you’re not doing it like your attachment parenting mama-friend? It’s most likely because you have different children who have different needs. Your intentional and sensitive responses to them will look different because we as humans are different, and that’s okay. In fact, we think that’s something to be celebrated!" Great post! Attachment Parenting is about responding with sensitivity and loving care at its core - read more at https://www.attachmentparenting.org/principles/respond. API is partnering with the National Parenting Education Network - NPEN on the #ParentingEducationMatters campaign to encourage families around the world to seek support from the professionals in parenting in their area, as well as discover the myriad benefits that parenting educators, and the parenting information and skills they bring, contribute to a family’s well being, to communities, and to society as a whole. Because #ParentingEducationMatters, find a local AP Support Group in your area, use the API facilitator guide to learn about AP support and start a group (www.attachmentparenting.org/groups/list), or attend an upcoming Attached at the Heart Parenting Educator training (www.attachmentparenting.org/parented). |

“Offstage, really build up the deposits in your emotional bank of sweet moments with your son. This will help you develop a sense of the big picture, and a sense that he’s going to be fine.” "For parents... the negativity bias is intensified by our determination to avoid mistakes, which often means “overlearning from the few things that go wrong, and not learning from the many things that go right. The good news, says Hanson, is that parents can train their brains to resist this bias." ~ Valuable read by Nicole Graev Lipson for the Washington Post. It’s only when they fall out of balance, or are misapplied, that things go awry. |
Feed with Love and Respect
"To explain the persistence of lower rates of breastfeeding among black mothers, we should look to systemic and historic factors rather than individual choice. That's the argument of Skimmed: Breastfeeding, Race, and Injustice (Stanford University Press) by law professor Andrea Freeman, which provides in-depth historical, socioeconomic and legal context that sheds new light on black motherhood." Book author Andrea Freeman discusses the history of breastfeeding among black women, and why media portrayals of black moms matter. |
