We are very excited to bring you an AP Month theme that we feel very passionate about--particularly as API has long embraced parenting for a more peaceful world.
In the midst of a world already wrestling with life's natural challenges, our hearts ache for the pain we choose to inflict on each other whether by our fears, confusion, or own pain. It feels as if around us violence grows and solutions whither.
API Leaders, volunteers, professionals, and educators already address the issue of violence on a daily basis, however, this year API takes the month of October to amplify our message about secure attachment and make that connection to the prevention of violence. We'll be talking about conflict and understanding, peace, pain, war, harmony, abuse, reconciliation, nonviolence, listening, sharing, hearing and more. We will present it in essays and images, foster discussion in communities, and take the message to the media at large.
We believe API has a response, an answer, though certainly not all the answers. We believe that consistent and loving care, responding with sensitivity, and nurturing touch go far to foster love and trust, and dissolve hate. The Principles are not an identity or a list, but real actions of relationship that encompass our dearest needs. We practice these in our homes and our communities, with our families and friends and workplaces and be the change, be the difference on a grand scale for generations to come.
Parents tell us that API resources show them a new way - away from yelling, punishment, and stress. API Support Groups encourage parents and serve as a refuge from the challenges and the pressures that seem to fuel even little conflicts. There is something to this Attachment Parenting and this community.
We invite you to join us by contributing and advocating for API's Principles of Parenting this AP Month. Visit AP Month Central, follow the daily tips on APtly Said, contribute your photo to the gallery, help fundraise for API's mission, become an AP Advocate, and take this opportunity to come together, in harmony.
API welcomes newly accredited API Leader, Karin Harvey-Olson, and gratefully recognizes the service of many API Leaders with anniversaries this month and next. We also recognize the long-time service of dear volunteer Stephanie Petters and thank her for advancing the cause so passionately. We would not be where we are without her.
Thank you,
Attachment Parenting International

What is going on behind closed doors?
... But we do know that violence has to be planted in a person's mind as an acceptable option, in whatever situation. Babies aren't born violent. They are born wired to seek connection. Connection is the opposite of violence. Babies have to learn violence. They have to learn disconnection. They learn to detach as a survival mechanism when their needs aren't meant. There are various degrees of this, as we see in insecure attachment research, and definitely few insecurely attached children grow up to choose violence that makes the news. But that detachment is the first step to accepting violence as an option at all.
